October 2023

Hey there, friends,

As many of you know, I wear different hats, but my heart for education pours into everything I do.

I support a few writing communities through coaching and teaching, and I encourage homeschoolers with consultations and tutoring.

I help run our family business while parenting young adults and mentoring teens.

With our grandson’s arrival, I am learning my role as Oma.

Regardless of whether you are a reader, a writer, or some combination of both, I hope my emails will encourage and entertain you. Who knows, these words might inspire you, too.

The Accidental Novelist

I never intended to become a novel writer. I mean, sure, I always loved to write, but in 2016, while facilitating a novel writing class with a group of homeschoolers, something dramatically changed. The students were having a hard time with a few of the assignments, so instead of telling them how to write, I produced examples to show them.

At this point, I had self-published two non-fiction books. One was based on my faith journey, and the other on my experience living with teenagers. The first person to suggest that I write a novel was my friend's teenage daughter. I was flattered that she thought I could write a novel, but I quickly dismissed her comment.

Several years later, I’m writing fiction along with my students. Suddenly, a whole new world opened in my mind. Characters, settings, plots, and dialogues began revealing themselves. At first, it was a little scary to hear people talking in my mind.

I would hear full conversations or imagine a place I had never been before. It was frustrating because the only way to stop the rush of ideas was to write them down. Gradually, these pieces and glimpses connected to create a story.

It's funny how we see ourselves. I limited myself to believing that I was only a non-fiction or educational writer. Writing novels was not a plan, but over time, honing my writing skills, learning new things, and not being afraid to take risks have grown into one of my greatest passions.

Want to try your hand at fiction?

If you are curious about or interested in writing, then I encourage you to pursue the craft.

Beginning January 9th, I am offering a Short-Story Writing Class for Adults.
