February 2024

WOW! This is my natural response to readers reading my work. It’s humbling.

So, thank you to those of you who replied with interest to be involved in Wanderer’s read-through. Although it is a couple of months away, your willingness encourages me.

It’s not too late to join the party. LINK HERE

THE CHALLENGES OF WRITING LOVE SCENES

There are unique aspects to writing that I had no idea would be issues for me. Firstly, you know that I never intended to be a novelist. I had no aspirations to write The Great American Novel, yet here I am, plugging away at transcribing my characters’ stories while teaching and entertaining readers.

Secondly, romance and love scenes can be tricky. I’m all about teen angst and an occasional cozy romance, but after a bit, my middle-aged self desires some steam. Apparently, my characters do, too.

Authors must decide whether to write open-door or closed-door scenes, implicit vs. explicit content. While writing, I negotiate with my characters and sometimes view the scene through various filters—reader, writer, viewer, parent, mentor, or friend.

Unapologetically, my stories contain intimate scenes, but thankfully, my readers are more offended by curse words than by the natural progression of romance and intimacy. If and when you are faced with how to write a romance scene, take note of what you like to read and write what you know or can be easily imagined.

SHOW SOME LOVE

Being the month of love, how about you leave some STARS for your favorite authors? Stars and reviews boost rankings for authors, which helps them get more views and better placement on various sites. If you aren’t an Amazon shopper, that’s okay. You can leave reviews on Goodreads or email your books’ authors directly so that they can use your review on their author links. You have no idea what kind of LOVE that shows the writers whose words you have spent your valuable time reading.

I understand that this is an extra ask of your time, but authors appreciate your efforts.

STEPHEN KING’S ON WRITING

I haven’t read much by Stephen King, but I grew up scaring myself with his movie adaptations. Mr. King fed all my irrational fears of clowns, big dogs, and obsessed fans, and The Shining remains one of my all-time favorites.

I listen to this audiobook yearly. He’s become one of my adult writing teachers, and I am thankful that he had the opportunity to record his book.
